Chapter 18

There was something about the cabin. Chaz could feel it but could not quite discern what it could be. The cabin seemed simple enough. Anyone happening upon it wouldn't think twice about it.

She looked at the old potbelly stove. Then she looked into the bedroom again. Her eyes then happened to fall upon the open trunk. Why would someone lock up pots and pans? No one would steal them.

Leaning over the trunk, she saw a pair of wooden handles on the interior sides. She pulled up on them and the bottom of the trunk lifted out. Below she saw a key button entry pad.

Chaz popped off the cover. These types of locks looked impressive, but they were easy to break into. She just hoped that there was still power. She pulled off a white and black wire. After stripping them, she wrapped them together. A green LED lit up and mechanical click sounded from the door.

It was then that she saw two naked women leaning over and flanking her on either side. Their breasts hung down near her face. She rolled her eyes and grabbed the handle. After a quarter twist, the hydraulic pistons lifted open the heavy steel door.

A florescent light blinked to life. When her eyes adjusted to the light, she looked down the hole again. A short steel ladder led down into a chamber.

Perry cringed; "Do you think drug runners made this?"

"This must be some sort of abandoned military facility. The game designers must have adapted it as the game control center," she replied. "I'm going down for a look. You stay here."

"You can forget that," Perry grumbled with a shiver. "I'm not staying up here."

The girls had a determined look upon their faces. "Okay, but stay with me," she relented. She stepped into the chamber and climbed down the ladder.

At the bottom, she saw an innocuous room. It was a rectangle with three plain white walls, a gray tiled floor, and a suspension white ceiling. One wall had a heavy steel door. It was much more tamper resistant than the first.

When she heard feet upon the ladder, she looked up and saw Perry's curvy ass cheeks coming down toward her. She placed her hands on Perry's hips and helped her down. When Sean came down the ladder, she examined the door. It reminded her of a vault.

She ran her hand along the smooth steel surface. On the right side she saw an optical identification system. Below it was a palm scanner.

"Can you get into it?" Sean asked, chewing upon her lower lip.

"This is an emergency virtual reality control center. Federal law mandates that all VR environments contain one. There has to be a way into it," she replied. A red laser beam suddenly shot out from above the door. It scanned up and down them.

The door popped open with a pressurized hiss. Powerful servos swung open a foot thick vault door. The bolts were six inches in diameter and could with stand a small nuke.

A blast of warm air rushed over them. The girls didn't wait for an invitation or Chaz's permission. They rushed through the door and into the facility.

Chaz had a bad feeling about this. There was something wrong about this place. Where were the technicians and game controllers? They should have appeared the moment the door opened. However, it was the girl's only hope of survival and that meant she had to take the chance.

She stepped through the open doorway and into a plush office. The floors were covered with thick red shag carpet. The walls were paneled and adorned with cream color drapes. Expensive brass light fixtures hung down above them.

To her right she saw what appeared to be a half-circle receptionist desk. Papers, phone, and personal items were arranged with care. A heavy thud sounded behind him. The vault door closed and locked. "It looks as if they were staying."

A hallway led off in a circled and then in two different directions. Plexiglas doors lined the inner walls. Lights activated when they approached. Three doors slid open.

Perry rushed into a room. "Oh my god, it's a bedroom." She tore off the comforter and wrapped it around her. She rushed through another door and declared, "It's a bathroom." Chaz heard running water. "It's hot!"

That was all the convincing Sean needed. Sean raced into a room to their right. "I suppose. I'm going to look around," Chaz declared, but the girls were gone. Their doors slid shut behind them and turned opaque.

Chaz followed the hallway around. There were two stairwells on opposite sides. She made one loop and then took a stairwell down. She found another sublevel. It too was a circle lined with Plexiglas doors.

The facility went down three more levels. The bottom level, however, had a smooth stainless steel door with the international biohazard symbol upon it. There was no keypad or eye scanner.

Without any way to open the door, she was about to leave when her foot kicked something. She reached down and picked up an electronic identification badge. "Somebody left in a hurry." She held it up to the door, and it slid open.

Chaz entered a vast round chamber. The entire chamber glistened with stainless steel stairs, columns, and circular grated ramps. It soared up five stories.

Cages lay strewed about the floor. In the center of the room, she saw a stainless steel exam table. Equipment sat about it, none of which she recognized.

She then saw another tunnel on the opposite side of the chamber. At her approach, lights activated. This illuminated an arched white tunnel. Her footsteps echoed off the walls as she traversed it. At the opposite end, she came to another chamber identical to the first. Beyond that chamber lay yet another tunnel. All in all, she found five more chambers. When she entered the last tunnel, she arrived back where she started.

"What the hell is this place?" she muttered.

A sign above a door read 'Programming Facilities'. She held up the badge and the door opened for him. Inside she found a complex of offices, labs, and computer server rooms.

Five stories up in the complex, she noted an office with a placard above it that read 'Environmental Director'. "This seems promising," she said to herself. When the door slid open, she saw a vast open office. It was round with four distinct areas. Each was accessible from the center area.

One held a large desk, black leather chair, and office furniture. The second had dark oak shelves filled with books. Red leather chairs, dark paneling, and dark green pile carpeting invited one to read.

The third area held a large wooden four-post bed. The carpet was blue, the walls tan and the bed covered with a thick crimson comforter. It held a walk-in closet, which was filled with women's clothing.

The last area was a living room of sorts. It had brown leather furniture. A wet bar was on one side and an aquarium on the other. All in all it reminded him of some postmodern architecture. It was a real 'Logan's Run' kind of place.

Chaz wandered over to the office. The name placard read 'Dr. Lana Thorn. You can tell a lot about a person by their desk. It was neat to the point of anal. Everything was arranged as if measured down to the last millimeter. She was a careful, controlling person. It was no wonder she created a virtual universe. It offered her complete control.

Chaz sat down in her chair. The soft, cool leather cradled and supported her. It was comfortable so that one could spend long hours in it, but it was not so comfortable that it made one sleepy.

The computer monitor was a newer style, flat screen, LCD. 'So much for the 1970s,' she thought. When she moved a wireless mouse, the screen illuminated. Fortunately, she never logged off her system, and the monitor powered off.

She scanned the icons. There was the usual array of Windows programs. One labeled test subject logs interested her. She clicked on the icon.
